Surgical & Medical Retina

The retina is a thin light-sensitive layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eye. The retina captures light and then sends the signals to the brain that result in vision. Disease of and/or damage to the retina can cause blurred or loss of vision. Prompt medical treatment is often required to save the vision in the eye.

The retinal specialists who work with us understand the urgent nature of patients with potentially vision threatening diseases of the retina and are committed to ensuring patients are seen urgently when necessary and provided with the highest quality care.

Conditions

RETINAL DETACHMENT

A retinal detachment causes the retina to be separated from the underlying tissue which supplies the retina with necessary oxygen and nourishment. A retinal detachment is a medical emergency and symptoms include the appearance of many bits of debris (floaters), sudden flashes of light or a shadow in the vision field. Prompt medical treatment can often save the vision in the eye.

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Diabetic Retinopathy is caused by damage to the retinal blood vessels in patients with diabetes, resulting in leakage of plasma constituents in the surrounding retina and retinal swelling (oedema). The risk of developing Diabetic Retinopathy includes poor control of blood sugar levels, high blood pressure and increased cholesterol. Medical treatment may include laser treatment, intravitreal injections or surgery.
