Orthoptist Clinics

ESA conducts Orthoptic Clinics to assess, diagnose, educate, monitor and provide follow up, including post operative care, for a range of eye conditions.

Orthoptists work to established protocols and visits to this clinic are at the request of the treating ophthalmologist who continues to oversee and be involved in patient care.

Post operative clinics

Aftercare for some surgical procedures may be booked on an Orthoptist led post operative clinic as determined and supported by the ophthalmologist. The orthoptist provides testing, examination and education for patients who have undergone certain laser eye surgery, cataract or corneal procedures.

Ascan Clinic

Our Ascan Clinic is a pre-operative assessment for measuring the length, contour and shape of the eye prior to cataract and intraocular lens (IOL) surgery. These measurements are used to predict and personalise the power of the lens used for surgery, with the aim of achieving the best possible visual outcome. This assessment also provides screening for underlying disease and disorders, ensuring factors that may affect the surgical outcome are recognised preoperatively. Preparation Instructions to ensure measurement accuracy: Remove contact lenses at least one week prior to your appointment and begin using the lubricant eye drops provided, 1 drop, 4 times per day, the day before your scan and until the appointment time.

Plaquenil Clinic

Plaquenil remains an important treatment option for rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or Sjogren’s syndrome. Early detection of maculopathy resulting from Plaquenil use is important, as although toxicity is uncommon, it can result in irreversible vision loss. This clinic aims to provide an effective, evidence based and convenient screening service for Plaquenil maculopathy. Patients of participating ophthalmologists, who have been prescribed or are taking Plaquenil, may be offered an appointment on this clinic for retinal screening and monitoring.
